The 19th of January is the return of A Recorded Guide Through!
Leaving the popped collars of Brunswick behind we have moved to the west! Our new home: The Night Heron in Footscray.
This Recorded Guide we will be playing only songs about Dreams and Nightmares. Post-punk to Swedish commune noise rock to synth pop to ayahuasca chants to sunshine ballads your nan loves.
Phisha performs a unique style of percussive fingerstyle acoustic guitar with intriguing techniques,
But then takes it a step further by incorporating it around meaningful songwriting and a voice that can tell a story.
Come see and hear for yourself...
Because it is indeed music that needs to be seen, not just heard.
The elusive wrongjazz trio Richards/Palliser/Wadley are very happy to be playing The Night Heron with esteemed legends of guitar and cyberhardware sonics- Mick Turner solo...."A nothingness fills my head"... and with their first foray togethor into the aleatoric realm- Dave Brown on tenor guitar, pedals and minimal preparations, in duo with Tina Douglas on conductive objects and electronics.. No door charge , it promises to be a great night at the ever hospitable Night Heron. Hope to see you there.

Gerard Lewis-Fitzgerald : Although Gerard has dabbled intermittently in writing over the years (short stories, poetry, songs), it has only been in the last few years that he has been increasingly able to perform to an audience. One the poetry side of things, this began with a poem slipped into a three-item set at musical open mic nights at various venues in his local West/South Gippsland area. Only this year has he also ventured out into the Melbourne Spoken Word scene at such venues as The Owl and Cat, the Dan, WestWord and even as the only token male of the incomparable Pregnant Lentils. He gratefully admits that this exposure to the demi-monde of performance poets has been as a friend, co-writer and protege of his co-feature Yvette Stubbs.
Yvette and Gerard first performed on the same stage in improve theatre, then called Theatre Sports, competing against each other. then as a couple in The Marx Brothers. Gerard as Groucho and Yvette his drunken wife Ruth. They have toured a multi award winning shakespeare show, The Best Bits of The Bard, and much more. They currently work together and individually on various poetry gigs through out Gippsland and Melbourne. Yvette is an old hand at strutting the poetry gigs boards, she tells us the family of poets are her life pump, every time she feels listless, she gets a boost of blood to the brain when she hears and experiences others work. Yvette writes in a way that angsty mirth way, like a barbed wire kiss. she fills your bathtub with slush and washes it away with gusts of bravado. if you have seen her perform well this is going to be different and some of the same, if you havent then hold your hats on, you are in for one hell of a summery, musically macabre ride.

Each reader is encouraged to read both their own work and poetry by somebody else.*
As always there is stacks of poetry by all sorts of poets available so if you don’t have your favourite poet handy, or don’t have a favourite poet, you could find them . The stack will do its best to relate to the theme... (wish me luck).
If you want an audio recording of your reading it's easy to do, just say so on the open mic sign up sheet and include your email.
The best readers will get a prize at the end of the night (you have to stay until the end to get your prize).
Multilingual readers are welcome and fantastic.
The Night Heron also has some of the nicest bar staff and beer ever. There's a pretty courtyard out the back.
Entry is free, but donations are awesome.
*(If your chosen poem(s) is 3 pages or more, please have a chat with me before you get started so I can make sure you will have enough time.)
Last part of the night, Music! Which will also respond to the theme, will play, anyone can volunteer two lines, two words, or even the same word twice, responding to the theme. If you miss a spot on the open mic, this is a chance to write two lines to the theme, we will record you reading with everyone else who gets up with music, and over the next week it will magically appear slightly remixed on the Facebook page.
We're throwing a party because the coolest gal in town is back.
